I remember when I was a kid and we were getting ready on Sunday mornings for Church. My dad would get up and fix us breakfast. We would wake up to the smell of fried eggs, bacon and toast. (Sometimes we had biscuits and gravy too) We would go into breakfast in our PJ’s (including mother in her gown). Daddy, of course was dressed, we’d pray, eat and go off to our rooms to get dressed. Daddy would go to the living room, sit in the rocking chair and read from the “Dixon” bible. As mother herded us through the dressing… encouraging and admonishing, she would send us in to daddy to be in “charge of us” (aka: keep them clean) until it was time to leave. Needless to say 4 kids + 2 adults + one bathroom = frenzy not calm and order. We’d hustle out to the car 10 minutes (at least) before services. In the car, things would settle down. Mother would put on her lipstick. I grew up thinking that lipstick was to be put on in the car on the way to our destination. When we got there (now remember this is the Bush family) we would all scurry out of the car. Each of us went our own way…looking for friends, playing or just generally messing around. I never remember EVER being late for church…in fact; sometimes we were the first in the parking lot. Mother and daddy walked together to the building, Daddy in his suit, white shirt, tie and polished shoes. Mother in her hat, gloves, heels nylons…not pantyhose…, shawl, and a linen or lace hanky. (the hanky was important cause I’ve been given spit baths with it!!!!) |
As I was in the process of making this image, I wanted to show the energy and action it takes to get somewhere. I have a dear friend at church. She IS energy. Sylvia Barnier has the most beautiful legs and shoes, but most importantly, is beautiful inside and out. She reminds me of my mother as she always wears a dress to church, talks to everyone, shows love and compassion and is always busy. This image is dedicated to God in honor of my two “church ladies” Sylba (Talia’s best friend) and My Mom.
